Teen Artist of the Week: Sam Williams

My good friend and ArtSpotNYC’s first Teen Artist of the Week, Sam Williams, agreed to let us interview him. Sam is 16 and attends Hunter College High School in New York City; when he isn’t swarmed by the usual amount of work a high school junior receives, Sam enjoys shooting both film and digital photography.

So Sam, how long have you been involved in photography for?

A: I’ve been taking pictures for about three years.

What drew you to become an artist/photographer, and what are your inspirations?

A: I like taking pictures and being behind the lens. I’m inspired by my friends and photos I see on the internet, on websites like tumblr, flickr, and ffffound, as well as facebook.

What do you think of when you hear “contemporary art”?

A: I think first of the MOMA, then I think about my friends and their artwork.

Do you know of any contemporary artists? If so, who are your favorite?

A: I’m really bad with naming famous people. My friends are contemporary artists.

Lastly, what do you think defines “art”?

A: Art is expression. It’s what you want it to be.
