John Currin

Born in Boulder, Colorado, John Currin was raised in Connecticut and privately trained by the Ukraine artist Lev Meshberg. Currin received his BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and his MFA from Yale. Currin is known for his incredible technical skill and provocative sexual themes. His influences range from Renaissance to fashion models, bringing diversity and depth into his art. Currin’s distortion and exaggeration of the female form along with pornographic themes has led to criticism for being sexist. Currin has had retrospective exhibitions at both the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. He’s represented in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Tate Gallery. John Currin lives and works in NYC.
