If you find yourself in the Lower East Side anytime before May 8th, be sure to check out what’s going on at the New Museum. Closing then is Condo’s exquisite exhibit “Mental States”. Making his first real art debut in the 80′s, he became part of the East Village art scene. Condo is a unique painter; he uses the style of the old masters, while his subject matter comes entirely from his imagination. In his words, his paintings “reflect the madness of everyday life”. This has been my personal favorite exhibition at the New Museum, and I highly recommend going to see it.
Also currently at The New Museum is an exhibition of the sculptor Lynda Benglis. Originating from Louisiana, Benglis began her art career as a painter in the 60′s. The current exhibition includes some of her wax paintings, brightly colored poured latex works, and her recent experiments with plastics, cast glass, paper, and gold leaf. Although slightly overshadowed by the greatness of Condo’s exhibit, Benglis’s work is still cool and is worth checking out.
